Redefining Psychiatry Through Biology and Data
Brisbane, Australia – December 10, 2025 – A recent large-scale genomic study analysing data from more than one million individuals suggests that major psychiatric conditions may share underlying biological architectures, challenging traditional symptom-based diagnostic categories.
The research indicates that fourteen commonly treated psychiatric disorders may cluster into five genetically related groups, reflecting shared biological pathways rather than entirely distinct disease entities. These findings help explain the high prevalence of comorbid diagnoses and reinforce the need to move beyond checklist-based classifications toward mechanism-driven models of care.
Shared genomic regions, including loci associated with dopamine signalling and neurodevelopment, appear to increase risk across multiple conditions simultaneously. Many implicated genes are active during fetal development, suggesting that vulnerability may originate early in life.
For Ketim Technologies, this shift toward biologically informed psychiatry aligns directly with its mission. The company is developing biomarker-driven diagnostics for postpartum depression, with the long-term goal of contributing to subtype-specific, mechanism-based approaches to mental health.
“If we can define biological signatures that distinguish meaningful subtypes within psychiatric conditions, we move closer to preventative and personalised care,” said Dr. Clarissa Yates. “Postpartum depression is our starting point, but the broader vision is precision medicine for mental health.”
As genomic and proteomic data converge, psychiatry is increasingly positioned to transition from descriptive categories to measurable biological frameworks — enabling earlier identification, shared-risk modelling, and improved therapeutic targeting.
Ketim remains committed to advancing this evolution through rigorous biomarker validation and translational science.
